Prisoner of Pain

The future’s looking far too bright
Frozen in its intense light
There’s far too much to gain
You’re a prisoner of pain.

You hang on to what you know
Just maintain the status quo
And it may sound insane
But you’re a prisoner of pain

Circumstantial incarceration.
Is your excuse for avoiding action.
There are things you have to do
You know “They all depend on you”
And it’s a crying shame
But you’re a prisoner of pain

A bird in a not so gilded cage
Smiling to suppress your rage
You want to make the change
But you’re a prisoner of pain

Shackled by your fear
You’ve shed so many tears
And there’s no one left to blame
But you’re a prisoner of pain

I could offer you some good advice
I could tell you how to live your life
But I can’t escape my chains
And I’m a prisoner of pain

This poem was inspired by a comment

made on Flutter's blog by Krista.

"Why does pain feel safe?"

I thought it was from a song. Your poem is excellent, and would indeed make great lyrics. Or wedding vows. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!

I'm not sure pain does feel safe. I had a pain in my chest for a couple of days last week and I was terrified. Even though I knew deep down it was nothing.

Great poem though.

It's a very good question.

You focus on how pain holds people in and keeps us boxed; there's also a comfort that ongoing pain offers, I think. We get used to it; it becomes part of our self-definition. Without it, who are we?

Sometimes I believe that pain is the normal human condition.

AS always you leave me speechless. Good work, that's hard to do

But you’re a prisoner of pain.

Fuck that, I don't do that, that is for those afraid to move on.

I've bagged it all and moved on whenever I felt I should or needed too, and started over again, from scratch.

I have no regrets about doing so either. I'm sitting here now with free and clear property and very few bills and do pretty much what I damn well please.

Mostly a lot of screwing off, helping others, and camping. Not in high fashion, but high fashion is a pain in the ass to support.

I'm okay with doing it my way. My little life is pretty damn good and interesting, it's the bigger picture that bothers me.

Not that it can hurt me much, but it does bother me a lot.

Hey hon, hang in there, if you want to feel better drop by and pull my pud, ha ha ha.
